Dr. Shapiro's Picture Perfect Weight Loss
Howard M. Shapiro
Read:2004

NOT Recomended

"Dr. Shapiro believes that there are no bad foods, no right or wrong reasons to eat, no perfect number of meals in any given day. He doesn't believe in telling clients at his weight-loss clinic in Manhattan when they can or can't eat. Some of them are celebrities and corporate executives with such busy lives that mealtimes are often unpredictable. So Dr. Shapiro reassures them that a calorie is a calorie, whether you eat it before or after 9 p.m. He helps them lose weight by showing them different foods, set side by side, and how the seemingly healthier choice might actually be equal to or greater in calories than a bunch of foods that would seem to be off-limits to someone trying to lose weight." (Amazon.com)

While I really wanted to like this book, It fails it's central purpose which is to show in picture form the different amount of calories in food. That being said his comments on 'what to eat' and 'how to eat' seem right on the money. I simply can't understand how no one has commented on his crazy calorie counts! For example: His first comparision in the book is the one below.
1 fat-free, sugar free Muffin 9 oz = 720 Total Calories
                    vs
1 Pineapple (2lbs) 240 Calories
1/2 Cantaloup (1lb) 60 Calories
1/2 Kiwifruit	(1 1/2 oz 10 Calories
1/2 Papaya	(5 oz) 40 Calories
grapes (5 oz) 70 Calories
2 pears (6 1/2 oz)	100 Calories
2 wheat roles	(2 1/2 oz)	200 Calories = 720 Total Calories

If this looks and sounds wrong to you,,,,,, IT'S BECAUSE IT IS!!!!!!!

  1. Please find me a 9 oz Muffin.
    • Otis spunkmeyer muffin 4.0 oz
      Panera Bread 5.75 oz
      Starbucks 3.5 oz

    • That being said, the Calorie count for a 9.0 oz muffin is correct.(If such a thing existed. A more honest picture would have 2 muffins

  2. Relative Muffin Size
    • But even if the Calorie count for this 9.0 oz muffin is correct, it's relative size is way off. The picture shown looks like a regular 4.5 oz muffin. If your going to say it's 9.0 oz, you need to increse the size of the picture.

  3. Pinapple and Fruit Packaging
    • Since your not showing the wrapper and package the muffin came in, why do you think it's honest to show the pineapple and melon rinds? After you core that pineapple it will be A LOT less in size.

  4. Calorie Counts, The Biggie.
    • Even if we allow all of the following, the calorie counts given are just plain wrong. "Dole Fruit Company", "Weight Watchers", and the "USDA pocket calorie guide", ALL agree within 5 calories or each other. Dr. Shapiro doesn't.
