As mentioned in the Skagway section, The reason Skagway did not become a ghost town was partly due the fact they built a train to carry passengers and cargo through the White Pass in the mountains. It was later used by the mining industry and closed in 1982. It was reopend 1988 as a scenic rail road. You can take a trip up to white pass and back for some great views of the mountains. A great trip if you’r in the area, but its hell trying to get good pictures from a moving train, lol.
They have an interesting process for the trip. You ride up to White pass and the summit lake. Then they move the Engine to the back of the train and all of the seats flip over and face the opposite direction for the ride down. In a couple places you can see the original White Pass Trail used by men and horses before the train was completed.
