College Fjords
The Second “Major” day for glacier viewing, College Fjords. Once again the plan is the same, cruise down the Fjord, park the boat in front of a coup glaciers, spin it around so everyone gets a good look and then head back to sea.
Again we were worried the weather would ruin the day, but even in the clouds and mist the scenery was incredible. It did start off very foggy but cleared up enough for some great views by the time we got into the prime glacier area. The College Fjords area different from the Glacier Bay area most notable for the trees and vegetation that grows right up to the glaciers. A little easier to get a sense of scale. Personally we also found they give you the excellent “river of ice” look, and you have no issues thinking of them as frozen rivers.
Also of note in this are are the tow ‘Pre Glaciers’ for lack of a better term. You can get a great look at how these large glaciers are formed. Add some snow, have it melt and erode during the summer, add more snow until the weight of the snow is some much that it literally forces itself in the cracks of the eroded area and with a few more freeze/thaw cycles you have a glacier. Very cool.
Things to note include:
1-2 Early morning fog
3 Otters, true size not zoomed, this is what you see with the naked eye
5 ‘Pre’ Glaciers
7-17 Frozen Rivers
18-23 Sea Lions
24 By the time we turned around to leave, the fog rolled in and everything disappeared again
